EQ Readthrough: Issue 13, The Secret of the Wolfriders

Issue 13: The Secret of the Wolfriders
Questions for this issue:
  • What do you think about what's going on at Sorrow's End?
  • Was Leetah right to bump Cutter's arm?
  • What was the most interesting part of the Wolfriders' origin story for you?

And, since things have slowed down, a repost of the generic potential-discussion-questions:
  • Which character did you particularly like in this issue?
  • What event(s) surprised you?
  • What scene was most memorable?
  • How would you like to see this issue explored in fanfic or fanart?
  • What did you wish had been different?
  • If you've read the series before, what part had you forgotten?
  • Did this issue bring you any new insights about the world of two moons?
  • Did you like the opening & closing artwork?
  • Was there anything interesting in the letters section?
  • If you've read the series before, what did you dislike then and find yourself liking now, or vice-versa?
Note: These aren't mandatory questions; they're meta prompts. If you don't care for any of them, or want to tangent from them to some other topic, that's fine too.

Oh, I love the art, especially during Leetah's conversation with Winnowill. The Wolfriders' origin story really made an impression on me the first time I read it and I still don't think I have seen anything quite like it. The weird racist tone in Winnowill's contempt of the Wolfriders seems to fit in quite well with the isolationist and conservative people the Gliders have become at this point, too.

The revelation of the Wolfriders' mortality still makes me sad, not for them but for Leetah, who will probably eventually see her lifemate and children die. I was quite young when I first read this (maybe 9, I think) so I didn't really understand that part at first, and IIRC I was more surprised that the other elves were immortal :)

Well, Ember, anyway -- isn't Suntop immortal to begin with? Or is that line about "Ember drew the wolf blood to her" (or whatever it was) just metaphorical talking about their personalities?

(dunno if we're worrying about spoilers here, but I'll spoiler-space the relevant bit...)

I thought it was really poignant when way down the line, in Kings of the Broken Wheel, Skywise begged Leetah to take away his wolf blood and make him immortal so that he would have time enough to find everyone, and not die first, especially as Leetah compares the deed to Winnowill's similar changing of Windkin. Something struck me as a bit "cheap" about that being repeated with various other elves, though (or am I misremembering that it was?).

Oh right! I had forgotten about Suntop not having wolf blood. I always understood that in a literal sense too (when I remember it, that is).

That entire arc still makes me cry like a baby when I read it. I don't remember that, er, thing being repeated with other Elves, though, but it might be a series I never read?

I thought there were; some of the (mixed) people who were around in the Sun Village or something? And yes, it would be well on in the series, past KotBW. I'm still working through the stuff at elfquest.com as my physical copies stopped at the first Hidden Years collection, so it all tends to blur together. I might be mixing in New Blood, Shards, Kahvi, Rogue's Curse and who knows what-all together in my brain. (And as I said, I may just be misremembering.)

I dunno, Rainsong and Woodlock's children and grandchildren either died or were put in wrapstuff according to ElfQuest.com, and Dart survived in wrapstuff too. I had forgotten Windkin, though, and what Winnowill did to him.

And yeah, my collection stops pretty much after KotBW, though I did read Shards and and some of Hidden Years, but not all of HE was published in Denmark. (And I can thank EQ.com that I have read anything that came after that, too)
