Something the whole series glosses over, even though it's mentioned: Timmorn wasn't Timmain's only offspring. Many of the wolves of their tribe are long-lived and very intelligent for wolves. And they can send, with more coherent messages than true wolves.

Makes sense to me. The wolf-blood is still strong in the wolfriders - so I guess it's only logical to say that the elf-blood is still strong in the wolves of the tribe, too.

On the other hand - the wolf-blood seems to enable Cutter to communicate with other, possibly not-elf-related wolves, too. (Thinking of the frozen mountains again, here.)

About that last point... I'm sure it helped a lot that Cutter lived around wolves and "just" from experience knows their body language, and what kind of behaviour from his side would cause what kind of reaction, etc.
You don't need wolfblood for that, or Dart couldn't have taught Sun Folk elves to get along with jack-wolves.
